MTS Systems Corp. Sensors Division has introduced a new line of liquid level sensors using lower-cost variations of its Temposonics® magnetostrictive sensing technology. The new modular ML sensor design combines highly repeatable and reliable core sensing elements with cost-engineered housings, making the ML sensor ideal for the steel production, wood processing and form and fabrication industries. The ML housings come in a range of materials to accommodate applications in a wide variety of fluids that are part of heavy production equipment, including hydraulic oil and cooling water. “Using our low-cost core Temposonics sensing technology, we can now supply ML continuous level measurement products in applications where previously price has been an obstacle,” says Lee Aiken, industrial level product manager for MTS Sensors. “This means customers in the machine tool industry can now realize the safety and maintenance benefits associated with continuous monitoring of their critical fluid levels.” Historically, companies requiring feedback for their critical fluids levels were relegated to using discrete (high-low) level switches for feedback because of price. With the ML sensor products, machine builders and fluid reservoir suppliers can obtain continuous level sensing for roughly the same price. The continuous monitoring helps control the critical fluid levels more accurately and prevent catastrophic part and machine failures due to rapid loss of fluids. In addition, the continuous output between the typical “level high” and “level low” can be used to determine and trigger maintenance cycles within the machine controller. The ML product line is currently in production with a small envelope, IP65-sealed housing, and gauging up to 250mm. Additional measurement capabilities up to 1500mm will be released soon. Current ML sensors are available with stainless steel housings, popular plastic housings, or as an embeddable core sensor. Standard outputs will include 0Vdc to 5Vdc and 4mA to 20mA, with an input voltage of 12Vdc (other options upon request). The foundation of the ML product line is a highly economical and adaptable sensor for countless applications. MTS Sensors, a division of MTS Systems Corp., is the global leader in the development and production of magnetostrictive linear-position and liquid-level sensors. Based on MTS’ patented Temposonics® technology, the Sensors Division is continually developing new ways to apply magnetostrictive sensing technology to solve critical applications in a variety of markets worldwide.
