Digital Metrology Standards Consortium Forms New Committee for Model-Based Characteristic Submissions to ANSI

Jan. 29, 2025
The new committee is open to any parties that would like to join without charge and the final proposal will be completed on Monday, April 14, 2025.

The DMSC (Digital Metrology Standards Consortium) has formed the DMSC Standards Committee to be in charge of approving the Model-Based Characteristics (MBC) submissions to ANSI.

The DMSC is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Developing Organization, as well as an A-Liaison to the International Standards Organization (ISO).

DMSC will be submitting an MBC proposal to ANSI as part of the American National Standard (ANS) approval process. DMSC will be reforming its Standards Committee (SC) to document and approve a final MBC 1.0 standard proposal to ANSI.

Developed in 2024, MBC was created by domain experts from the manufacturing quality community, including a variety of industries. This community went through and identified quality measurement needs under the direction of the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC).

The Model-Based Characteristics (MBC) standard defines nomenclature, definitions, symbols, data structures, and practices for identifying, communicating, and exchanging model-based characteristics through a logical data model and supporting documentation. This is a common approach for tagging and identifying different product characteristics that are of interest for product verification.

The DMSC Standards Committee has stated that it's open to all parties with Model-Based Characteristics interest. While there is no charge to join the committee and DMSC membership is not a requirement, the DMSC has said that a party must specifically request to join. The committee will review/revise the existing DMSC version of MBC, reformat the document to meet ANSI requirements, and vote to accept/reject the final proposed MBC 1.0 document. If approved by the committee, this final document will be submitted to ANSI for approval as an American National Standard.

Approval of the final proposal will be completed at an in-person meeting on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the MxD facility in Chicago. Committee members who are not attending the in-person meeting will have the opportunity to vote via email, according to the DMSC.
