American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. is investing more than $100 million at its Three Rivers, MI, plant this year, it announced, and it predicted the improvements would add more than 500 new jobs there. Also, the manufacturer of driveline and drivetrain systems for light trucks, SUVs, passenger cars, crossovers, and commercial vehicles, said the new capabilities would diversify its North American product portfolio and customer base.
The new capabilities include “advanced machining equipment, R&D laboratory equipment, (and) IT infrastructure upgrades,” among other additions.
Without further detail, AAM indicated the investment will involved new production lines, multiple assembly stations, paint line modifications, and more shipping and receiving capacity. Also, there will be improvements to the facility's business offices and reception area.
The company did not explain how the investments at Three Rivers would add to the plant’s product lines. Presently, Three Rivers manufactures front and rear axles and assembles front and rear propeller shafts. In addition to drive systems, American Axle manufactures drivetrain and driveline components and modules, chassis systems, and metal-formed products
In December, AAM indicated its new business orders includes assignments from Chrysler, Daimler Truck, Ford, Honda, Mercedes Benz, and Nissan, as well as General Motors.
"Last fall, we announced that AAM would be bringing new business to Michigan," stated David C. Dauch, president and CEO.
Over recent years, most of American Axle’s capital investments have been made to add capacity or capabilities at its overseas manufacturing operations, which includes plants in India, China, and Thailand.
"For the past two years, we have been preparing the Three Rivers Manufacturing facility for this new business launch,” he continued. “Now, we are in a growth mode and hiring hundreds of associates. This is exciting news for the State of Michigan, the City of Three Rivers and for AAM."
American Axle noted the work would involve several Michigan-based businesses.
