Maxon’s EC16 is a brushless DC motor with a diameter of only 16mm, a length of 56mm and a power rating of 40 Watt!
The speed range of this fast running motor is from 0 to 60,000 rpm. Lower speeds and a corresponding high torque can be implemented with a planetary gear from the maxon modular system. Brushless DC motors need the information of the actual rotor position for the electronic commutation of the three phases. With the available motor, the proven concept to separate the control magnet from the main magnet has been applied.
Thus the Hall sensors of the electronic commutation are protected against interference of the magnet and the winding current. The significant characteristics of this brushless DC motor with the best magnet material available on the market today, Neodymium, are the small dimensions, the extremely wide speed range, the high dynamics and specifically the unsurpassed lifespan.
Other advantages include high efficiency, no cogging, and the largely linear speed/torque gradient which enables excellent control characteristics. These servo-drives are mainly used in medical and dental technology, as well as in high speed construction tools and automation systems.
