Roller Sensor Bar for Irregular Package Detection

July 21, 2023
SICK USA's conveyor packaging sensor can be mounted beneath packages to detect irregular packages and prevent traffic jams.

A photoelectric sensor solution to accommodate a variety of packaging shapes and sizes, the Roller Sensor Bar (RSB) removes high installation costs with its spring-loaded end cap that removes the need for tools to teach and align the sensor. It also features flexible mounting options to easily integrate into different conveyor applications.

Able to be mounted between rollers or belted sections to detect objects between conveyor sections and in transfer zones, the sensor uses ambient light technology to increase throughput by reducing false trips due to objects in the background. The technology works using IO-Link communication to deliver real-time status information that works to avoid unplanned downtimes and conveyor jams.

Housing lengths are offered in 8 to 47 in. (200 to 1,200 mm) and beam spacing between 2 to 8 in. (50 to 200 mm) to detect any type of package.

With precise, leading-edge detection and object overhang detection to reduce conveyor jams, the Roller Sensor Bar is ideal for flat or irregularly shaped objects due to the mounting of the sensor between the rollers looking up at objects on the conveyor.

Mounting brackets are included and it doesn't require a reflector due to its energetic sensing principal technology. It also offers integration into control cards with multiple connection types, cable lengths, and configurable outlets.

  • Reduce conveyor downtime due to false switchings on background-objects
  • Optimize sensor performance by configuring beam spacing to the mm
  • Increase detection area across the entire conveyor bed by removing blind zones on the near and far sides of the conveyor
  • IO-Link provides individual beam break information which can be used for product alignment
  • Decrease installation costs with a tool-free installation using a spring-loaded end cap
  • Eliminate the need for sensor alignment and teaching with factory preset sensing range
  • Precise detection of leading edges
  • Outstanding ambient light immunity
  • Housing length: 8 to 47 in. (200 to 1,200 mm)
  • Beam separation: 2 to 8 in. (50 to 200 mm)
  • Number of sensing points: 2 to 8
